A fatal train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive opposition criticisms regarding the speed and management of the country's key public works projects.
The accident occurred on the trans-isthmus railway, a route built to join the Atlantic and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was designed to offer an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring regional growth in the area.
“We will thoroughly investigate the cause of this incident,” affirmed the national leader.
The official reported that, of the approximately 250 individuals on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in serious condition. The president stated plans to travel to Oaxaca to confer with those impacted.
Major Initiative of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a central public works project of the previous administration, whose time in office finished the previous year. This venture was intimately linked to his administration's strategic vision for the southeastern region.
Another massive rail project from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the wider plan to kickstart the economic fortunes of a relatively less developed part of the country.
Building Management and Worries
The building of both rail lines was overseen by the nation's military, marking a dramatic increase of its role in national projects. They were executed at an accelerated speed, defying predictions to be at least partly launched before the end of that administration.
However, this rushed timetable had simultaneously sparked significant apprehensions over safety standards.
- Sunday's crash was the third event on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This includes an prior accident this month when a train struck a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also seen two non-deadly derailments.
Demands for Review and Suspension
In the aftermath of the disaster, the head of a key rival party called for an urgent suspension in the construction and operation of all such projects.
This stoppage was requested until the completion of a comprehensive technical review. The party stated that the loss of life "calls for prompt explanations."
In reply, the head of state insisted that the train had been functioning in full accordance with all operational standards. Promises were given that the government would be "diligent" in both the construction and operation of these national undertakings.
